Resumen

Datos de tiempos de retención de semillas de la palmera Syagrus romanzoffiana en el tracto digestivo de tres dispersores (zorro de monte Cerdocyon thous, mono aullador Alouatta caraya y tapir Tapirus terrestris) y del efecto del pasaje por su tracto digestivo en la germinación de las semillas. Como controles para evaluar los efectos en la germinación, se ensayaron, además, frutos intactos que retenían la pulpa y frutos despulpados artificialmente. Los ensayos experimentales fueron realizados con ejemplares en cautiverio albergados en el Centro de Investigación de Animales Silvestres, ITAIPU BINACIONAL.

Data from seed retention time and germination experiments conducted by Giombini et al. Column headings: 1. Seed.ID: Identification of each seed. Those named as 01.NA to 25.NA were only used in gut retention time, but not in germination, assays. The data frame is ordered by Seed.ID 2. Assay: Denotes the period during which experimental assays of fruit offering, seed recovering from animal feces and sowing were conducted. Assay 1: started on dd/mm/yyyy=11/11/2019, ended on 05/12/2019 Assay 2: started on 13/01/2020, ended on 12/02/2020 3. Treatment: Pre-sowing treatment applied to each seed. Intact: fruits retaining all the pulp; Depulped: fruits which pulp was artificially removed; Depulped.soaked: depulped fruits that were then submerged in water until the next day (for comparison against tapirs that defected in water pools); Fox, Howler, Tapir: seeds recovered from fox (Cerdocyon thous), howler (Alouatta caraya), and tapir (Tapirus terrestris) feces, respectively. 4. Individual: Identification of the different individuals of each species (whenever possible) 5. Mother palm: The mother palm which each fruit (seed) was collected from 6. SRT.Low (hours): The lower limit of each seed retention time as an interval-censored observation (i.e. the earliest possible seed release time resulting from our monitoring scheme), measured in hours. 7. SRT.Upp (hours): The upper limit of each seed retention time as an interval-censored observation (i.e. the latest possible seed release time resulting from our monitoring scheme), measured in hours. 8. Germination: Germination occurrence or failure at the end of the experiment, coded as 1 or 0, respectively. 9. TGerm.Low (weeks): The lower limit of time to germination for each seed as an interval-censored observation, measured in weeks (7 days) 10. TGerm.Upp (weeks): The upper limit of time to germination for each seed as an interval-censored observation, measured in weeks (7 days) 11. Viability (TZ.Test): Viability of seeds at the end of the germination experiments, assessed by means of the Tetrazolium test. Evaluated for 25.5% of all seeds that did not germinate at the end of the experiments. V: Viable, NV: Not viable. Other details: In all cases, "NA" denotes Not Available datum. "Inf" indicates infinite for upper limit of interval-censored data in cases where no seed germination was observed until the end of the experiment (i.e. a "right-censored" observation).
