Samples were collected from Ridgway’s hawk during breeding seasons (February-July) of 2016 to 2019, at the time there were the only two breeding populations of Ridgway’s hawk in the Dominican Republic: Los Haitises National Park (LHNP) and Puntacana Resort and Club (PCRC; Hayes et al., 2019). Larvae of different sizes and pupae were collected from parasitized Ridgway’s hawk nestlings and abandoned nests. They were transported to the laboratory at ambient temperature in plastic containers with a layer of ca. 2cm of uncooked dry rice and/or dried grass. We also opportunistically collected samples from nestlings and nests of other bird species. Immature P. pici were reared under climate-controlled conditions (temperature: 26±1°C; humidity: 65±15%, photoperiod of ≈ 14:10 (L:D) h.). We weighed larvae within 5 hours of collection using an electronic precision scale (±0.001g) and kept these and pupae (collected from abandoned nests) individually in 10 cm3 plastic containers with a substrate of uncooked dry rice until pupation. We recorded puparia and pupae weight (± 0.001 g), length and width (± 0.1 mm) using a precision scale and digital calipers on the 2nd day after pupation. We visually inspected larvae and pupae daily, and recorded initiation of pupariation and the day an adult emerged from the puparium. After emergence, we transferred adults to individual 12 x 12” mesh containers and fed them twice a day. We kept adults until their natural death, and then we measured body and right-wing length and thorax width (± 0.1 mm). We sexed adults after death and identified them to species level following Couri (1999). We used the sex of each adult to assign sex to that individual’s pupa and larva.
