dc.datacite.description
Walnut production in the provinces of La Rioja and Catamarca accounts for 46.7% of the total cultivated area in Argentina (National Agricultural Census, 2018). From March to May of 2017 and 2018, samples were collected in the Antinaco–Los Colorados valley (La Rioja Province) across five localities distributed along an altitudinal gradient ranging from 1000 to 2100 meters above sea level (m asl). In 2017, samples were collected from 16 farms, and six additional farms were included in 2018, totalling 22 sampling sites. These sites repre-sented the three categories of walnut producers: smallholders, medium-scale producers, and greater scale agribusinesses (Maschio, 2017). Due to the low number of medium-scale pro-ducers in the study area, they were grouped with agribusinesses for data analysis. At each site, 100 walnuts were randomly collected from storage areas. In the laboratory, each walnut was individually placed in a 180 cm³ polypropylene contain-er, sealed at the top with voile fabric. The nuts were inspected daily and maintained under controlled environmental conditions until the emergence of adult insects. After 30 days, any nuts with no sign of adult emergence were opened and examined under a stereomicro-scope to check for any hidden insect damage and or remains. Temperature data were ob-tained from weather stations located in each locality, in proximity to the monitored farms. Given the geographic scope of the valley, all variables were analyzed based on altitudinal gradient and producer type. Farms were categorized by elevation into: (a) low-altitude zone (1000–1500 m asl; nine farms) and (b) high-altitude zone (1501–2100 m asl; 13 farms). They were also classified by producer type into: (a) smallholders (14 producers) and (b) medium-scale producers and agribusinesses (eight producers). All insects found were identified and counted. The following parameters were calculated: relative abundance (RA = number of individuals of each species / total number of individu-als recorded), damage percentage (% Damage = [number of damaged walnuts / total wal-nuts observed] × 100), and infestation index (II = number of individuals per insect order or species / total walnuts observed), following Benavidez et al. (2021). Parasitism rate per spe-cies was also estimated (% P = [number of hosts parasitized by each parasitoid species / total number of hosts collected] × 100). The relationship between the presence of pest species and altitudinal gradient, producer type, and sampling year was analyzed using Generalized Linear Models (GLMs) with a binomial distribution (link = "logit"), and Zero-Adjusted Gamma Additive Models (ZAGA), fitted using the gamlss function. Model selection was based on Akaike Infor-mation Criterion (AIC). Response variables included damage percentage and infestation index by insect order. Multiple comparisons were conducted using the emmeans (estimated marginal means) function. All analyses were performed using R statistical software (version 4.4.2, R Core Team).
