This Excel dataset contains raw morphometric measurements and derived folding indices of the dorsal dentate gyrus in wild individuals of Octodon lunatus and Octodon degus. The resource includes: (1) contour length measurements (µm) from serial histological sections of inner and outer dentate gyrus boundaries in both hemispheres, and (2) calculated gyrification indices (dorsal and ventral, left and right hemispheres), together with individual-level biological and social variables (sex, population, body mass, brain size, and social group size). The dataset was generated within a research project aimed at evaluating ecological and social drivers of hippocampal folding and hemispheric asymmetry in wild Octodon species. Raw contour measurements were used to compute folding indices reported in the associated peer-reviewed publication.

Brain tissue samples from wild Octodon lunatus and Octodon degus previously published in Sobrero et al. (2016) were reanalyzed to quantify dorsal dentate gyrus (dDG) gyrification in both hemispheres. Samples were collected between 2010–2012 from natural populations in north-central Chile. Using rostrocaudal coronal hippocampal sections, inner and outer contours of the dDG were semiautomatically traced at 4× magnification, and contour lengths (µm) were obtained with stereological software. Gyrification was calculated using standard Zilles and Vogeley gyrification indices, defined as the ratio between inner and outer contour lengths across sections. Raw contour measurements and derived folding indices are provided in this dataset.
